The Ministry of War, also referred to as the War Ministry, is the executive government ministry charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the Armed Forces of the Central Galactic Union. It, along with the Ministry of State Security, have administrative responsibility for the national security of the Republic. It is also the largest single employing agency in the Galaxy, with around 3% of the human population employed as active-duty military service members, supported by one billion civilians and an unprecedented 21 trillion reserve military servicemembers. Around a fifth of all synthetic citizens are employed by the Ministry of War, either as servicemembers or as civilian support, accounting for 20 trillion additional employees.

The Ministry of War is headed by the Minister of State for War, also called simply the Minister of War or War Minister, a cabinet minister and one of the most prestigious members of the Council of Ministers. The Minister of War is fifth in the order of precedence, after the Supreme Chancellor, the Vice the Chancellor, the First Consul, and the Prime Minister. Beneath the Minister and the central office are the service departments, the Department of the Army, the Department of the Navy, and the Department of the Air Force. In addition to agencies and offices under the four service departments are the independent Office of Military and Naval Intelligence, the Special Warfare Research Agency, the Logistics Service Agency, the Military Health and Science Agency, and the Inspectorate-General of the Armed Forces. The Joint Military Staff is a special advisory commission of the heads of the armed services and the joint commanders which reports directly to the Minister of War and the Executive Council. Military operations are under ministerial and executive oversight, but are largely handled by the Joint High Commanders and the Combatant Commanders.
